Scammers are tricking people into using Bitcoin machines (sometimes called Bitcoin ATMs) to steal their money. Once the money is sent, it cannot be gotten back.
🚨 Warning Signs
Be careful if someone:
- Tells you that you must act right away
- Says you owe money for taxes, court papers, bail, utilities, or fees
- Claims to be from the police, a court, Social Security, the IRS, or your bank
- Tells you to go to a Bitcoin machine to make a payment
- Asks you to keep it a secret from your family, financial advisor or lawyer
❌ What You Should Know
- Real government offices will never ask for Bitcoin
- Banks and utility companies do not accept Bitcoin
- Bitcoin payments cannot be reversed
- Bitcoin machines are often used by scammers
✅ What To Do Instead
- Stop and do not send money
- Hang up the phone or stop responding to messages
- Call a trusted family member, friend, or attorney
- Report the scam to:
- Federal Trade Commission (FTC): reportfraud.ftc.gov
- Local police
- Your state Attorney General
