The Conversation Your Parents Don’t Want to Have—But Your Family Needs.

Estate Planning Awareness Week 2026 | October 24 | Day 6 of 8

Love Them Enough to Have a Plan. Eight Days. Eight Conversations That Matter.

“Mom, have you updated your estate plan?”

“I’m fine. We don’t need to talk about that.”

Sound familiar?

Talking with aging parents about estate planning, medical decisions, and future care can be uncomfortable.

But avoiding the conversation doesn’t make those decisions disappear. It may simply leave your family unprepared when a crisis occurs.

Why Is Estate Planning So Difficult to Discuss With Parents?

For many older adults, these conversations can feel like a threat to their independence or a reminder of their mortality.

Adult children may worry about appearing controlling or overly concerned about an inheritance.

The key is to approach the discussion with compassion and respect.

Estate planning isn’t about taking control away from your parents. It’s about helping ensure their wishes remain in control.

Three Questions to Ask Your Aging Parents

You don’t need to discuss every financial detail in one conversation. Start with these questions:

1. “If you had a medical emergency, who would you want making decisions for you?”

This opens the door to discussing Health Care Powers of Attorney, Living Wills, and other medical directives.

2. “If you needed help managing your finances, who would you trust?”

A properly prepared Durable Financial Power of Attorney and/or Trust can authorize a trusted person to handle financial matters when appropriate.

3. “Do you have an estate plan, and does someone know where to find it?”

Knowing that documents exist—and where they’re located—can make a tremendous difference during an emergency.

Don’t Wait Until a Crisis Makes the Decisions for You

Estate planning works best while individuals have the legal capacity to understand and make their own decisions.

Waiting until significant cognitive decline or incapacity can limit available planning options and may result in the need for court intervention.
